Brian van der Voort
A Senior Project Manager and Technology Advisor, Brian leads the Business Intelligence and Data Management Practice at Quadrus Development Inc. Brian has more than 30 years of hands-on IT industry experience managing traditional and Agile projects within energy, government, healthcare, construction, engineering, retail, transportation, utilities, law, not-for-profit, software product development, and other business sectors.
Brian is a firm believer in the power of data and technology to empower organizations to be more effective and efficient. His advanced technical expertise and passion for data analysis has helped hundreds of organizations turn their data into valuable information that supports faster, better business decisions. Brian is a P. Eng. with a BASc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He is also a certified Professional Scrum Master (PSM), and holds Project Management Profession certification through the Project Management Institute (PMI).
Christian Wokem is currently an Instructor in the BSc Construction Project Management program at SAIT. He has a PhD in Structural Engineering and has been involved in many residential, commercial, Industrial and Infrastructural projects. He has also been involved in several research projects as well as teaching for over 10 years.
Colin Moreland is an experienced Project Manager, Business Analyst and PMO Builder. In his time working with 3esi (now 3esi-Enersight), Colin was involved with over 100 software implementations for major international energy companies including Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Encana, BP, BG, and many others. Colin has also built multiple Project Management Offices using a pragmatic approach that ties business value to strategic vision through project execution.
Colin’s recent work at the University of Lethbridge has seen the University go from a Gartner PPM Maturity score of 1.1 in 2015 to 4.2 at the end of 2016. He is a lead with on a Canada-wide Higher Education Project Management collaboration team (the CUCCIO PPM Group) and is working with post secondary institutions across Canada to mature their PPM and PMO methodologies in a rapid and consistent manner. Colin is an active member of the Arts community and a Board member of the Lethbridge Symphony. He was a founding member of the PMI-SAC Toastmasters group and teaches Business Analysis at Mount Royal University.
D. Todd Hisey
D. Todd Hisey MSc, PMP, MAPM, MMP, CD is a retired officer with 22 years of experience leading soldiers in the Canadian Army. While not employed in the Army, he built and led organizations for Oilsands developers in the fields of maintenance and project management. He recently completed a MSc in International Construction Management from the University of Bath (UK) and completed a dissertation on the leadership styles of project and construction managers in the Canadian Oilsands. He is married and has three children. While not working he enjoys hunting in the mountains.
David Brady is a senior risk professional with over 35 years of project experience developed with global companies and international projects with the majority being in the oil and gas, mining, and infrastructure industries. He has direct experience in all aspects of risk management, project management, and construction work. His duties and experience have been diverse, producing a record of accomplishment that demonstrates his commitment to service, excellence, and the ability to manage risk and lessons learned. This is reflected by his peers and co-workers considering him a Risk Subject Matter Expert. His work includes developing risk programs, standards, and procedures, managing and implementing qualitative and quantitative risk programs for projects ranging in value from less than $1 Million to over $11 Billion dollars, and developing training and presentations for risk and other project programs.
In addition to risk, David has gained strong experience in all aspect of project and construction management in various roles as Project Manager, Director and Manager of Project Controls groups, Contract and Procurement Manager, Construction Manager, and Field Engineering Manager. He transfers his experience to others through teaching of PMI courses, being a university guest lecturer, mentoring, and developing project and engineering conferences.
He has written and published seven project and risk papers and has made over a dozen presentations at various Canadian and International conferences. He was the editor of the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering International’s (AACE) 2012 Decision and Risk Management Profession Practice guide. He has also peerreviewed a risk management book, a quality control book, and numerous risk papers. David is an active member in the Project Management Institute (PMI) and AACE.
Dr. Brad King
Dr. Brad King has worked with a variety of organizations from oil and gas to public sector and non-profits. Through the past decade, his focus has been on helping organizations innovate their services and improve organizational agility. He has been a project manager, business analyst, product owner, scrum master, change management lead, facilitator and even professor. Dr. Elizabeth Cannon
Dr. Elizabeth Cannon is the eighth president of the University of Calgary. Dr. Cannon is a Professional Engineer, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and an elected foreign associate of the National Academy of Engineering. Greg Sillak is Principal Consultant of Acumen PMO. He has over 30 years’ of project management experience with asset owners and EPC contractors through all phases of asset development and operation. His experience spans multiple small facilities projects, 6 projects over $1 billion, 6 plant turnarounds, 14 plant start-ups, front-end development of 20+ projects, 3 SAP implementations, 5+ PM software implementations, 2 IPO projects and several business process improvement initiatives.
Greg has been a PMI member since 1989 and became PMP certified in 2012. His project control teams were independently benchmarked as top quartile at 2 separate organizations. Greg Syrnick is a Senior Project and Program Manager with a successful delivery track record. He specializes in stewarding and managing large SAP implementation projects and transformational corporate initiatives. Greg helps his clients establish pragmatic strategies and governance models for tackling these tough and complex initiatives. Greg has played pivotal roles with three of Canada’s leading consulting companies that specialize in SAP implementations and SAP support services. Additionally, he’s managed programs with the other major consulting firms in the SAP system integrator space. Since 2009, Greg has been offering his expertise as an independent project management consultant to a number of different clients, in a variety of industry sectors.
Mr. Syrnick has over 33 years of experience in the Information Services industry and has been a consultant for over 23 of those years. He holds a B.Sc. in Computational Sciences from the University of Saskatchewan (Go Huskies!) and earned his PMP designation in 2008. Greg is an active hiker, smooth skier, frustrated golfer and avid sports fan. He loves Calgary and the great quality of life it offers.
Hayley Wickenheiser is regarded as one of the best female hockey players in the world. As a decorated Olympian, she has led her team to four gold and one silver medal as well as being named the tournaments’ most valuable player in both 2002 and 2006. For the 2014 Sochi Olympics Hayley was selected to be the flag bearer for the Canadian Olympic team in the Opening Ceremonies. During those same Olympics it was announced that she had been elected to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Athletes Commission.
As part of the Canadian Women’s National Team since age 15, Hayley has won innumerable regional, national and world championships.
Off the ice, Hayley’s achievements include: Sports Illustrated number 20 of 25 Toughest Athletes in the World, a two-time finalist for the Women’s Sports Foundation Team Athlete of The Year, named multiple times among the Globe and Mail’s Power 50 influencers in sport, and named among QMI Agency’s top 10 Greatest Female Athletes in the History of Sports. In 2011, Hayley was appointed to the Order of Canada “for her achievements as an athlete and for her contributions to the growth of women’s hockey.” She was inducted to Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2015.
Hayley has seen success not just on the ice, but also an elite softball player, as she participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics as a member of Team Canada and worked as a Softball Analyst with CBC’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
Wickenheiser’s passion for sport is matched by her desire to give back to the community in her work with organizations such as JumpStart, KidSport, Project North, Right to Play and dozens of other organizations. She has travelled the world to support those efforts, including trips to the furthest northern communities of Canada and as far away as Rwanda and Ghana.
Her most profound project has been the creation of the Canadian Tire Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival, which hosts over 1,500 female hockey players from around the world in Calgary annually giving girls access not just to hockey, but to world-class educational sessions both on and off the ice.
Hayley was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan and is a proud mom to her teenaged son, Noah. She has received numerous honourary degrees and graduated with Honours with a Bachelors in Kiniesology from the University of Calgary in 2013. In 2016, Hayley completed her Masters, running a study that is researching the connection between physical activity and the neurology of autistic youth.

As the City Manager, Jeff is focused on bringing stability to the civic administration and instilling confidence and trust in the municipal workforce. He oversees all City departments and works closely with the Mayor and Council on matters of importance to the citizens of Calgary.
Jeff received graduate and undergraduate degrees in urban geography and urban planning from the University of Waterloo, and started his career as a planner with the Region of Waterloo in 1979. Since then, Jeff has held various planning and managerial positions in governments across the country, including the Peace River Region, Edmonton Metropolitan Region, City of Winnipeg, and The City of Calgary.
After Calgary, Jeff served as the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Kitchener before becoming City Manager with the City of London; a role which he held for nearly eight years. In London, he led a team that successfully built a sustainable and fiscally responsible public service business, and was recognized for his role in establishing a strong, supportive workplace culture. Most recently, he was City Manager for Burlington before rejoining The City of Calgary as City Manager in 2014.
Jeff’s leadership philosophy is simple: individual responsibility and collective accountability. He believes that no one ever fails or succeeds on his or her own, which he feels is especially true in the public service. Jeff maintains that every City of Calgary employee has a role to play in ensuring quality services are delivered to citizens and businesses within the community on a daily basis.
Jishnu Subedi is currently teaching in the BSc Construction Project Management program at SAIT. He has Ph. D. in Civil Engineering and MBA. He has 20 plus years of experience working in structural design, construction sector, academics, NGOs and UN.
Joey Roa is a management professional with 20+ years of diverse experience in oil & gas, banking, government, and consulting. He is an experienced, passionate, and energetic leader that strives to deliver strategic thinking and tactical value to enterprises spanning multiple industries. Joey has had the privilege and opportunity to manage development teams, Enterprise Content Management functional teams, governance practices, project and programs exceeding $10 M in budget. For the past ten years, he has been responsible for the stand up, development, and active management of project management offices specifically within the Oil & Gas sector. He has been instructor for over 10 years and continues to feed his passion for instructing with a specialty in Information Systems Strategy, IT Asset Management, Program and Project Management, and Organizational Behavior. In addition, Joey is an accomplished speaker with past presentations given across Western Canada and the United States.
Joey is an honors graduate from the University of Calgary’s School of Business with a concentration in Management Information Systems and Finance. He maintains a PMP credential and continues to sharpen his saw by taking formal formals, attending industry conferences, and fueling his passion by self-researching a variety of business and management topics. Equal to his passion for continuous improvement is his focus on fitness and, in particular, cycling. In the summer months, you can find Joey on one of the many popular roadways or, if he’s particularly lucky, on one of Alberta’s beautiful mountain bike trails.
Jonathan is a marketing strategist for the Mount Royal University Conservatory. With a background in journalism, he has been a co-host and associate producer for The Calgary Eyeopener and The Homestretch on CBC Calgary, where he is also a featured columnist. Jonathan voices and produces videos, commercials and cartoons under his production business ToonVox (www.toonvox.com). Onscreen, he has appeared in television hits including Touch the Top of the World and Hell on Wheels. Onstage, Jonathan has written and performed many productions with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He has directed and performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa with the NAC Orchestra. Jonathan is also a founding member of Calgary’s comic a cappella group, the Heebee-jeebees (www.heebee-jeebees.com).
A construction professional with more than 35 years of experience, Kees Cusveller began his career as a project coordinator, moving his way through senior project management and forward into Corporate and Senior Management roles, providing leadership and direction to all operating groups and branches in the procurement and execution of alternative projects. With both a business and technical background, his leadership and innovative forward thinking has been responsible for strategic initiatives and vast alternative project delivery success. Under his tenure at Graham, the Graham Calgary group grew nearly 10 fold in both revenues and staff volume to become one of the top contractors in the market today.
Kees has an MBA from the University of Calgary, a Bachelor of Commerce (with distinction) from the University of Alberta, and a Construction Engineering Technology Diploma from NAIT. He is on the Executive and Board of the Canadian Construction Association (CCA), and is past Chair of the Alberta Construction Association, Calgary Construction Association and the Calgary General Contractors Association. As part of his role at CCA he chairs the Gold Seal Program as well as the General Contractor’s Council.
Kees is Chair of the Industry Advisory Committee at SAIT for their Bachelor of Science Construction Project Management Program, and was a major player in the creation of the program. A visionary for the future of the construction industry, Kees frequently speaks to students at SAIT, presenting bigger picture views, future trends, and inspiring and encouraging growth for their involvement in the industry. Kees is an ambassador for the mentorship of future construction leaders. He was an advocate in generating interest and a creating larger reach for SAIT’s recent 100th anniversary mentorship program and is a frequent and active speaker at construction industry events.
Ken has been an IT and Program Management Director and Principal in a number of large organizations, focusing on business transformation, IT organization, strategic portfolio management, technology and strategy, business alignment, advanced project management practices, and teaching and training on program and project management tools, processes, and competencies. He has a Masters degree in Engineering (Project Management) from the University of Calgary.
Ken has extensive experience in information technologies applied to both public service organizations (Provincial and National governments, health care organizations, and other public entities) as well as the energy industries, in areas ranging from exploration (international and domestic), marketing, business development and production. His specialities are large and complex program and project management, the management of complex project portfolios, setting up and operating Project Management Offices, and the management of information technology people and processes, planning, alignment, and risk reduction. He has also had considerable success in facilitation and project intervention for troubled projects and organizations, and working with and mentoring project managers on difficult projects in a number of industries.
He has expanded his skill set by lecturing on effective leadership, IT organizations, and project management, and by continuing to teach in the Graduate Management and Engineering programs at the University of Calgary. He is also a guest lecturer on project management for the Queen’s MBA in Science and Technology, Royal Roads University, and the Executive MBA program at the University of Alberta. Ken is a recognized project management expert and top-rated speaker who is regularly invited to speak on IT, project management, and strategic portfolio management best practices.

Lieutenant-General, the Honourable Roméo Dallaire

Dallaire works tirelessly in shaping the dialogue within public discourse to create a momentum towards tangible solutions on important issues of our time including: mental health & PTSD, conflict resolution, veteran’s affairs, eradicating the use of child soldiers, genocide prevention and humanitarian intervention. His 2016 bestselling book Waiting for First Light offers a no-holds-barred self-portrait of the man and his ongoing battle with PTSD. The candid commentary reflects on what it’s like to live with the illness while motivating himself and others via humanitarian work.
Since the publication of his 2nd bestselling book (and subsequent documentary) They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children: The Global Quest to Eradicate the Use of Child Soldiers in 2010, General Dallaire’s primary focus has been his work with the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, continually seeking innovative ways to assist militaries worldwide to help eradicate the use of child soldiers, a mission to which he has committed the rest of his life.
Throughout his distinguished military career, General Dallaire served in staff, training, and command positions through North America, Europe, and Africa. Most notably, General Dallaire was appointed Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda prior to and during the 1994 genocide. General Dallaire provided the United Nations with information about the planned massacre, which ultimately took more than 800,000 lives in less than 100 days; yet, permission to intervene was denied and the UN withdrew its peacekeeping forces. LGen Dallaire, along with a small contingent of Ghanaian soldiers and military observers, disobeyed the command to withdraw and remained in Rwanda to fulfill their ethical obligation to protect those who sought refuge with the UN forces.
General Dallaire has served on UN Advisory Committees on Genocide Prevention and Peacekeeping Training, and as Special Adviser to Government Ministers on Veterans Affairs, National Defense, and War Affected Children. From 2005 to 2014, he also served as a Canadian Senator.

Scott MacPherson is the Dean of the School of Construction at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). As dean, he leads one of the polytechnic’s largest and most diverse schools, which provides construction-related training to around 4,800 full-time and part-time students a year. The School of Construction also provides support for lifelong learning and career advancement through Continuing Education programs and courses, specialty training and employee upgrading. The Continuing Education and Distance Education team handles on average nearly 7,000 individual course registrations annually.
As a member of SAIT’s senior academic leadership team, he works with managers and executive developing and implementing sound educational strategies and business practices to meet the evolving needs of learners and industry. Scott first joined SAIT in 2007 as the School of Construction’s Manager of Business Operations and later was named Associate Dean for Technology programs in 2010 and Dean in 2012.
Prior to entering academe, he pursued a diverse career in the private sector in the energy and construction industries with roles ranging from change management to business strategy. Mr. Thon has served as AltaLink’s President and Chief Executive Officer since 2002. For over 30 years he has held a variety of senior positions in the electricity industry, from operations and engineering to market design and financial management.
Mr. Thon is the current Chair of the Canadian Electricity Association’s Board of Directors. He sits on the boards of Alberta Blue Cross, the Calgary Stampede Foundation and acted as Vice-Chair for the Calgary Bid Exploration Committee. Mr. Thon is also Chair of Northview Apartment Real Estate Investment Trust and a trustee with the Canadian Athletic Foundation.
In 2013, Bow Valley College awarded Mr. Thon their Distinguished Citizen Award honouring his commitment to the College. In 2011, Mr. Thon was recognized by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce for his business and community leadership with the Sherrold Moore Award. In 2005, The Government of Alberta presented Mr. Thon with the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta.
Mr. Thon is a registered Professional Engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan.
